Dib walked along the sidewalk. It was about 11:00 at night. Everyday was the same. Why was he out that late? Just thinking
It was pretty easy to sneak out, mostly by the fact that no one cared where he was. With his head low, he walked through the echo of street lights. Wind beating on his face, Hands in his black hoodie, he continued to fight the wind and cold. He pulled his hood up, just to have it knocked off again by the wind. He yanked it back up to make it stay. The brisk of his warm breath faded in the night. Where was he going? He didn't know. Where ever it was, it wasn't anywhere he'd get lost. I don't think he'd go as far as out of the city. Or would he? Whatever. Who cared? No one. That's who.
Alley, after alley, he just kept going. Each alley had the same look, trashcan here, graffiti there. Nothing special. Dib sighed and tightened his hoodie on him. It had to be like only 30degrees outside. Dib closed his eyes, thinking whether he should head home or not. He lifted his head to see where he was. Not far. He could see Zim's house a block away. Knowing that he wasn't far, he decided to keep going. Soon enough he was at the walkway to Zim's house. He glanced at the door with a slightly angry look on his face. Why couldn't he just run in there, grab Zim and bring him to the authorities. It seemed so easy, yet turned out to be too hard. Dib turned away fast and started walking again.
Far from Zim's house now, but yet he still recognized where he was. More allies, more trash cans, more graffiti, more Zim. 'WAIT WHAT?' Dib thought to himself as he started running back to the ally he could have sworn he saw Zim in. Sure enough, He could see Zim's pak shining in the light. Zim was crouching against a garbage can. Head down, arms around himself, and back turned towards Dib. Dib didn't believe what he was seeing. Zim? Out in public? WITHOUT his disguise? Was he dead? Probably not. Dib walked up to him and reached his hand out cautiously. He rested his hand on Zim's shoulder. Zim only flinched a little bit. But brought his head up slowly and nervously. He turned his head slightly towards Dib. Eyes squinted and wet. Zim? Crying? Never thought it would happen. He looked up at Dib. Teeth clenched like he was scared or something. Dib continued to stare not knowing how to react. Zim just stared, breathing really slow and heavy. Then just closed his eyes and turned away. Would it be right to turn Zim to the authorities now? Dib didn't even know what was wrong with him. He could feel Zim shaking, he was dead cold. Why couldn't Zim just pick himself up and walk home? Why would he even come outside in this condition anyway?
"Zim?" Dib said, "w-what are you doing out here?"
Zim didn't respond.
Dib tried again.
"Zim. What's wrong?"
"Are you alive?"
Dib crouched next to him. He leaned forward to see Zim's face. Zim's eyes were closed, tears where running down his face. Teeth clenched but slightly opening to left air out. He opened his eyes and looked at Dib directly in the face. Then lifted one of his hands and pushed him away. Dib backed off. Zim stared for a couple of seconds then closed his eyes once more. I suppose because of all the hatred between the two, Zim wouldn't want Dib's support in any way. Or he was just cautious of what Dib might do. Dib stood up and started turning away. Zim's eyes slightly opened. He looked up at Dib as if he where saying "help me
" But yet, he refused Dib's help. Dib looked down at him. Zim weakly lifted one of his hands, he just held it there. Dib looked down at him with slight irritation. 'Does he want my help or not?' He thought to himself. Dib kneeled beside Zim once more. Zim rested his hand on Dib's knee ever so gently. Dib shivered. Just the thought of how ill Zim was made him feel uneasy. Dib hesitatingly rested his hand on Zim's. He slightly gripped it. Zim did the same on Dib's knee.
"What's wrong?" Dib whispered.
"Erf cndishons" Zim mumbled.
"Earth conditions" Zim said more clearly.
"What about them?"
Dib already had an idea why. Zim was probably having a reaction to being on earth so long; his body wasn't used to it. Everything on earth like the food, climate, and sun were probably making him sick. But what could Dib do about it? Zim's here to invade, to destroy earth, and yet he can barely stay alive here.
All of a sudden Dib saw flashing lights in the distance. The police were probably on the run looking for stupid, loitering, teenagers. They do it from 10:00-Midnight. Dib had to get out of there. But Zim wasn't gonna go anywhere. He could barely move.
"Zim!" dib whispered, "We gotta get outta here now!"
Dib did the first reaction on his mind. He put his arms under Zim's legs and neck and picked him up. Zim was thrown off by what Dib had just done. He opened his swollen, red eyes all the way. He just stayed there in shock as Dib picked him up. Zim was surprisingly light. Dib brought Zim to his chest and started walking quickly down the ally. The lights were getting closer. He didn't think he'd get caught, until seconds later sirens turned on. 'No, no. They can't be after me!' Dib thought to himself, 'How could they see me from so far away?' Dib picked up the pace. The lights seemed to be slowing down by the ally Dib was in. Sure enough, they were after him. Dib began running. Where could he go? Where should he take Zim? He could feel Zim's claw like hands gripping tighter to his shirt as he ran. Zim had a scared and painful look on his face. He leaned his head on Dib's chest. Dib's heartbeat was rapid, Zim could hear his breathing. His breath seemed to synchronize with his heartbeat. Dib was the only heat Zim had. Zim leaned more into him. Even though Dib was his enemy, Zim seemed to trust that he wasn't going to do anything that would harm him.
Dib came to the end of the alley. Looked around, and turned right. He saw a stairwell at one of the buildings. Instantly he headed down the stairs. Ducking in the corner of the stairwell, He could see red lights reflecting off the walls above him. Flashlights were shining down the ally way. Luckily it was too dark to see down the stairwell by plain sight. Dib looked down at Zim. Zim had saliva running down his mouth along with tears. His eyes were completely red. He was shaking more then ever now. So was Dib. Dib blinked letting tears pour down his face. He was startled by a noise up the stairs. A couple of police were walking above him, shining flashlights around everything, but apparently not the staircase. Eventually, the police left. Dib slowly came up the steps with Zim still in his arms. He walked out of the ally and back into the street lights. Dib started walking towards Zim's house. Still crying from all the fear he experienced today. He walked down the street with red eyes, a few cuts, saliva on his shirt and an Irken in his hands. He came to the entrance to Zim's house. He kicked the door open, and walked inside. He walked to the couch and set Zim down. Zim opened his eyes and glanced up at Dib.
"There's nothing more I can do, Zim." Dib said.
"I-I know." Zim mumbled.
Dib sighed and stood up. But right as he was about to turn Zim grasped his hand. Dib turned around. Awkward for him to show affection, Zim just sorta stared.
"Um, t-thank you
" Zim said awkwardly.
"Uh, no problem." Dib responded just as awkwardly.
Zim released Dib's hand and sat up. Dib swallowed, and it turned into another awkward silence. Zim looked down and said, "That is all." So Dib started heading out the door once more. He looked back, then just shut the door and left.
Dib walked down the street, trying to figure out what had all happened today. Why was Zim so far from home anyway? How'd he get there? Dib lifted his hand to his face. When he looked at his hand he noticed it was covered in blood. But it didn't matter. Nobody cared about him anyway. Now it didn't seem to matter if Zim destroyed the earth. Not like it was important to Dib anyway. One last tear ran down his face leaving a trail of blood with it. His hoodie looked disgusting, just enough to bring back all the fear he had at the time. He wasn't gonna try and expose Zim for a while. Realizing Zim had enough problems to deal with on his own. I suppose the both of them were a lot alike. But Dib didn't want to have the thought that his only friend was an alien. It seemed unnatural.
Dib walked up the sidewalk and entered his house. He slowly walked up the steps to his room. The house was pitch black. Everyone was asleep. Dib walked into his room, took off his hoodie and fell into his bed. 'You know,' Dib thought, 'even though Zim has tried to kill me a number of times, I don't regret one thing I did today.' Dib smiled to himself and let out a sigh of relief. 'Technically, Zim needs me to stay alive,' Dib thought, 'and I guess I need him too...'
